The UroLift System is a minimally invasive approach to the treatment of benign prostate enlargement, also known as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Your prostate gland is a small gland found under your bladder and is responsible for producing semen. Your urethra, the tube that carries urine from your bladder to your penis, passes through the center of your prostate gland.
Your prostate goes through two stages of growth. The first stage occurs during puberty when your prostate gland doubles in size. Then at age 25, your prostate gland enters its second stage of growth, which continues throughout your lifetime.
Over time, your prostate may grow so large that it blocks your urethra and the flow of urine, leading to your urinary symptoms.
Dr. Singh specializes in the diagnosis and management of benign prostate enlargement and determines if you’re a good candidate for the UroLift System during an evaluation. Treatment for your enlarged prostate may depend on the severity of your symptoms. Initially, Dr. Singh may suggest medical management, such as prescription medication, to improve your symptoms.
However, if medical management fails to improve your symptoms or you experience side effects from the medication, he may suggest the UroLift procedure. Premier Medical Group is recognized as a Center of Excellence for the UroLift System, and Dr. Singh specializes in performing the procedure.
Dr. Singh performs your UroLift procedure at the office, which takes about an hour. The procedure is performed without cutting, heating, or removal of any prostate tissue. To minimize any discomfort, Dr. Singh administers anesthesia prior to starting your UroLift procedure.
During the procedure, Dr. Singh inserts the UroLift Delivery Device into your urethra at the tip of your penis and threads it up to the blockage. He then places the UroLift implants around your enlarged prostate to lift and hold the tissue and open up your urethra to restore urine flow and alleviate your symptoms.
After the procedure, Dr. Singh provides instructions on activity modification, which may include some downtime. Though results vary, most patients experience an improvement in their symptoms within two weeks after their UroLift procedure.
